So you want us to divulge all our secrets to success? OK. Here you go:
Bring a change of clothes (or two or three)
Running generally equals sweat. Sitting in a vehicle in wet, sweat-soaked clothing equals not a great feeling plus nasty odor. Make the race more enjoyable for yourself and your vehiclemates – bring some clean clothes to change into after your leg. You can change at the facilities at some of our transition areas, in the vehicle or use the surfer/towel/car door method.
Bring a cooler loaded with water, hydration products, food, snacks, etc.
The 1Day Relay is a self supported relay – if you want to eat it or drink it, you better bring it. Oh, and don’t forget the ice.
Bring cameras
A picture is worth a thousand words. At 1Day Relay a picture (or video) can be worth a free entry into next year’s race! See our contest section for details. But beyond our awesome contest (you really should take lots of pictures and video to increase your chance of winning) you and your team are going to have some great memories of the day. Record them for posterity or at least to post on your Facebook page.
Review the course beforehand
There’s an old saying “The best way to get somewhere is to know where you’re going.” We’re not sure exactly who said it, but we are sure they would have taken the time to look over the course route and especially their individual legs before the race gets underway. The course is well marked, but things happen. So it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure you are staying on the official course.
Do a test run in your costume
Nothing will take the starch out of your shorts faster than a costume that chafes, rubs, binds, gathers, etc. A few days before the event get the team together for a test run in your costumes (You do have team costumes, right?). Not only will you be able to correct any wardrobe issues, you’ll give the neighbors something to talk about.
